Near Klushino, the thick morning mist mingles with the pungent smell of horse sweat and damp earth. Worn out by a gruelling all-night march, the Polish hussars wait in tense silence. They have not dismounted for well over ten hours, and their muscles burn with exhaustion, yet their hands remain clenched around the shafts of their five-metre lances. With every passing minute, the outline of their target emerges ever more clearly from behind the white veil – the sleeping camp of a mighty Russo-Swedish army five times their number.

On the seventeenth-century battlefield, a cavalry charge usually resembled a single, devastating blow, intended to shatter the enemy’s ranks in an instant. The clash at Klushino, however, unfolded quite differently. That day, the hussar banners had to charge the enemy not once, but as many as ten times in a row! How did the utterly exhausted troops of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth achieve the impossible, bringing the tsar’s might to its knees and clearing their way to the very heart of Moscow?

The Siege of Smolensk

To fully understand the origins of this battle, we must go back to the roots of the conflict. Since early autumn 1609, a full-scale Polish-Russian war had been under way, centred on Smolensk – one of the most formidable fortresses in Eastern Europe. The protracted siege of the city, which devoured enormous resources, pinned down the main forces of King Sigismund III Vasa and tied the hands of the Polish command.

The Muscovite Streltsy / wikimedia commons

Meanwhile, the Russians had no intention of sitting idly by while the city fell. Tsar Vasily IV Shuisky dispatched a powerful relief army under the command of his brother, Dmitry Shuisky. Alongside a mass of levied troops and units of streltsy, battle-hardened mercenaries from Western Europe were thrown into the fight. These were Swedish, German and French regiments, bristling with pikes several metres long and armed with deadly firearms. They were commanded by the Swedish general Jacob De la Gardie. In all, this formidable host numbered some 35,000 men and was marching straight towards the forces of the Commonwealth.

King Sigismund III could not simply wait for the enemy beneath the walls of Smolensk, so he decided to send part of his army against the Russians. Command of this corps went to Field Crown Hetman Stanisław Żółkiewski – a seasoned veteran and an able commander who enjoyed the respect of his men. As he slipped away from Smolensk, Żółkiewski had a mere two thousand or so soldiers with him! A gruelling race against time had begun.

The hetman swiftly set off eastwards, gathering under his command the scattered Polish banners operating far from Smolensk. As a result, his army soon grew to over 10,000 men – including more than 5,000 elite hussars and around 4,000 Cossacks. When word reached him that a strong Russian force was encamped near Tsaryovo-Zaymishche, Żółkiewski did not hesitate for a moment. He struck straight from the march, surrounded the enemy and placed them under a tight siege. The situation seemed to be under control, but just then chilling news reached the Polish camp: Dmitry Shuisky’s mighty army was heading straight for Tsaryovo-Zaymishche to catch the Commonwealth’s troops in a pincer movement. Żółkiewski found himself in a deadly trap. Fighting on two fronts against such overwhelming odds would have been a death sentence.

Young Stanisław Żółkiewski / Jan Matejko’s painting ‘Batory at Pskov’ / Wikimedia Commons

In this situation many commanders would have chosen to retreat, but Żółkiewski decided to seize the initiative. Rather than passively waiting for Shuisky to strike, he resolved to march out to meet him and give him a pitched battle.

The Hussars’ Night March

This required dividing his army. The vast majority of the Cossacks, several hundred horsemen and most of the infantry remained at Tsaryovo-Zaymishche. Their task was to conceal the departure of the main force and keep the Russian commander, Valuyev, convinced that the Polish army was still pressing the siege.

Meanwhile, under cover of darkness on 3 July, Żółkiewski led the strike force of his corps out of the camp – around 6,500 men, most of them elite hussars. The army had 18 kilometres to cover, which under the circumstances proved an enormous logistical challenge. The route ran along a narrow forest track mired in mud. The horses sank in so deeply that the riders were forced to dismount and lead their mounts by the bridle. In the difficult terrain, the Polish column stretched out over almost six kilometres. Cavalry marching like this was highly vulnerable to a surprise attack, should it run into an enemy patrol.

Dawn at Klushino

When the first Polish banners emerged from the forest near the village of Klushino early on 4 July, the vast, sleeping camp of the Russo-Swedish army lay before their eyes. Surprise was complete, which in theory created the perfect opportunity for an immediate attack. Żółkiewski, however, had to hold back. His hussars were exhausted by the night march, and the Polish column, strung out over several kilometres, was still emerging from the forest, slowly forming up in battle order.

Józef Brandt – “Skirmish with the Swedes” / wikimedia commons

Moreover, an unexpected obstacle stood between the Poles and the camp: the sturdy wooden fences and buildings of the village. The thick poles made a heavy cavalry charge impossible and had to be torn down, which cost precious time. With every passing minute, the element of surprise was melting away. Although chaos initially reigned in Shuisky’s camp, the alarm drums soon began to sound. Officers started rousing their men from the tents, while the foreign mercenaries swiftly formed the first squares, presenting a forest of long pikes and readying their muskets to fire.

“Necessity dictates we fight here…”

The Poles’ tactical situation left no room for illusions. Exhausted by the night march, the hussars faced an enemy with a fivefold numerical advantage. An orderly retreat was out of the question – the only chance of survival was victory over the tsar’s army. Field Crown Hetman Stanisław Żółkiewski fully grasped the gravity of his position and summed it up in words that have gone down in the history of Polish arms:

“Necessitas in loco, spes in virtute, salus in victoria”

that is: “Necessity dictates we fight here, hope lies in our valour, safety lies in victory“

The hetman chose to direct his attack against the left wing of the enemy’s battle line, where the Russian troops stood under the personal command of Dmitry Shuisky. Although they outnumbered the Poles several times over, they were also more poorly armed, badly trained and less ably led. The hetman was counting on a charge by the Polish cavalry to spread panic among the enemy and break their ranks. His plan was brutally simple: to crush the Russians and thereby force the Swedes to surrender.

Wojciech Kossak, ‘The Hussar Charge at Kircholm’ / Wikimedia Commons

The signal to attack rang out. The first Polish banners poured through the narrow gaps hacked in the fences. As soon as the hussars were clear of the obstacles, they closed ranks and broke into a full gallop. The shafts of their lances, over five metres long, came down with a clatter, forming a wall of wood and steel in front of the charging horses. The ground literally shook beneath their weight. The thundering mass of heavy cavalry smashed into the Russian ranks with unimaginable force, sweeping Shuisky’s front line off the face of the earth.

Unfortunately, the enemy’s numerical superiority was too great for a single charge to decide the battle. The fighting raged for three hours. Armour buckled under the blows, lances shattered, and horses collapsed from exhaustion and wounds. Some hussar companies had to pull back and renew their near-suicidal attack as many as ten times in a row! Żółkiewski had good reason for setting such a punishing pace. Through the relentless, crushing intensity of the charges, the hetman sought to trick the Russians into believing they were being attacked by a far larger army than was actually the case.

In the end, the Polish forces managed to drive the Russians back. The turning point came with a botched caracole by the Russian reiters. This tactic required the front rank of horsemen to fire a volley and then wheel away to make room for the rank behind. During one such turn by the Muscovite cavalry, the hussars burst in among them and broke their line, sending them into panicked flight. Some of the Russians scattered into the forest, but a sizeable group took refuge in their fortified camp.

The flight of the main Russian force did not, however, mark the end of the battle. On the left wing, General De la Gardie’s Western European veterans were inflicting heavy losses on the Poles. Sheltered behind the remains of the fences and bristling with long pikes, the infantry squares, supported by steady musket fire, formed a barrier that cavalry alone could not penetrate. Although the hussars initially tried to break their ranks, they suffered heavy casualties and were eventually forced to withdraw out of musket range. Seeing the mercenaries’ stubborn resistance, Żółkiewski had to halt the attacks and wait for the Polish infantry, delayed by the mud, and two light guns to arrive.

Jan Matejko – “Carowie Szujscy na sejmie warszawskim” / wikimedia commons

When the small but, at that moment, crucial Polish infantry contingent finally reached the battlefield along with two light guns, the tactical situation changed dramatically. Żółkiewski gave the order to open fire. Shot from the Polish infantry and artillery began systematically tearing into the ranks of the pikemen, blasting gaps in their formation. When their line at last wavered and the wall of pikes began to crack, Żółkiewski sent the hussars in once more. This time the Polish cavalry forced its way into the loosened ranks, finally breaking the resistance of the left wing.

But this was by no means the end of the battle. The hussars had smashed the enemy in the open field, driving them into a panicked retreat, yet most of the surviving Swedes and Russians had sought shelter in their fortified camps. And worst of all, despite the losses it had suffered, the enemy, hidden behind a palisade, still outnumbered the Poles.

A Diplomatic Triumph and the Road to the Kremlin

Żółkiewski, however, had no intention of throwing his battered hussars against the fortified camps. The hetman called off the attack and sent envoys to the Swedes with a tough but fair offer. The Western European veterans laid down their arms and swore never again to fight against the Commonwealth. What is more, several hundred of them even joined the Polish army!

Meanwhile, the final act of disgrace played out in the Russian camp. Dmitry Shuisky – the tsar’s brother and commander-in-chief of a mighty army – panicked when he saw the Swedes surrender. Like a common deserter, he stole away into the forest. When the Russian soldiers realised that their commanders had abandoned them, madness swept through the camp. The army broke and fled in disorder. The Polish banners immediately set off in bloody pursuit, mercilessly cutting down the fleeing enemy from behind. The battle was over.

The Polish victory was total and crushing. At Klushino, it was iron discipline, unshakeable morale, superb training and the genius of Hetman Żółkiewski that won the day. He imposed his own rules of the game on the enemy, dictating the time, the place and the pace of the fighting. The Polish hussars, worn out by a sleepless night and a gruelling march, had destroyed the tsar’s largest army. The road to Moscow lay open.

This defeat triggered a political earthquake in Russia. The discredited Tsar Vasily Shuisky was overthrown by his own boyars. And barely two months after the victory at Klushino, Hetman Stanisław Żółkiewski achieved what other commanders could only dream of. At the head of the Polish army, he rode triumphantly into Moscow and occupied the Kremlin.
